This paper reviews the current knowledge on mobility and geochemical characteristics of iodine in soils, especially the process of sorption onto soil particles. Great emphasis is laid on the main factors affecting iodine mobility in soil, such as soil pH, oxidation/reduction state, organic matter, clay mineral and metal (Fe, Al, Mn) oxide content, environmental factors, chemical forms of iodine, as well as the basic processes such as sorption and biologically mediated processes (biovolatilization and bioaccumulation).
